Deputy Secretary General visits CCBRT, Praising Fistula Work

On Monday, August 2, CCBRT welcomed UN Deputy Secretary General Dr. Asha Rose Migiro to its disability hospital in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Migiro chose CCBRT as an exemplary UN project: UNFPA has been supporting CCBRT's fistula project since December 2009. Following a meeting with CCBRT's Chief Executive Officer, Erwin Telemans, Dr. Migiro toured the hospital and even used the opportunity to have her own eye pressure tested.

Both Vodacom and UNFPA's Campaign to End Fistula have recently featured CCBRT's M-PESA mobile payment program for women who have fistula.

President Kikwete of Tanzania Calls for Investment in Baobab Maternity Hospital

On Friday, June 11, 2010, H.E. President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania was the guest of honor at a major fundraising event hosted by CCBRT in Dar es Salaam. Speaking at the event, which was also attended by Mrs. Blandina S.J. Nyoni, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and Hon. Dr. Willibrod Slaa MP, President of the Board of CCBRT, Tanzania’s President said: “I would like to thank all of you who are here today for assisting CCBRT to build the new maternity hospital, Also I would like to give my heartfelt thank you to all the organizations that are helping CCBRT in one way or the other to enable them to provide services to Tanzanians. I plead with the organizations that have started to help CCBRT to build a hospital that will provide maternal and neonatal health services, to continue to do so that the hospital becomes a reality within the planned set time.”

Sitta launches Strategic Plan

Dr W Slaa, Chairman of CCBRT, Mr S Sitta, Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and Patron of CCBRT and Mr Erwin Telemans, CEO of CCBRT arriving at the launch of the Strategic Plan to build Dar es Salaam's new maternity hospital in a public-private partnership between the Government and CCBRT.

On June 2nd, Tanzania's Speaker of Parliament (and CCBRT's Patron), The Honorable Mr. Samuel Sitta, launched the Strategic Plan for the creation of Baobab Maternity Hospital on the site where the new hospital will be built adjacent to CCBRT's existing disability hospital. During his speech, he praised CCBRT for its impeccable credentials and said the project was in safe hands. He also described this as a turning point for Tanzania's health sector. Kupona Kicks Off

The first week of March 2009 was quite a big one for Kupona and CCBRT!  On March 3, Kupona became a recognized legal not-for-profit corporation.  One day later, the Foundation convened its first Board meeting, with special visitors Dr. Willbrod Slaa (Member of Parliament in Tanzania and Chairman of the CCBRT Board of Directors), Mr. Erwin Telemans (current CEO of CCBRT) and Mr. Geert Vanneste (Private Consultant and Former CEO of CCBRT).

Good spirits and great hope abounded, but the excitement did not end there.  The afternoon concluded with a special visit to the United Nations for a meeting between the Kupona/CCBRT team and Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N., Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania.


CCBRT in the New York Times!

In February 2009, Ms. Denise Grady wrote an incredibly poignant article about the problem of fistulas in Tanzania, looking especially at a hospital in Dodoma (read the full article here).  While CCBRT and Dar es Salaam were not the focus of this article, Ms. Grady was kind enough to include CCBRT on the article's How to Help Link.
